Winners of Anti-Tobacco Public Service Announcement Contests Announced on March 27, 2012

On March 27, 2012, the winners of a local anti-tobacco radio and video PSA contest were announced live on WSTU-AM during the weekly "Coachess Corner" radio show.

The Anti-Tobacco Public Service Announcement Contest is co-sponsored by WSTU/WPSL-AM Radio, the Quit Doc Research and Education Foundation, and the Tobacco Free Partnership of Martin County. The contest gives local youth the opportunity to create their own 30-second radio and video PSAs highlighting youth tobacco issues. This year, the contest was again expanded to include entries from both Martin and St. Lucie Counties.

Radio finalists were selected by local radio personalities and tobacco control staff. The finalists were then judged by members of the Miami Marlins television and radio broadcast teams. The broadcasters ranked the finalists and selected the top three radio entris in each category.

 

First place in the Radio category was awarded to "Help Me Out of This Addiction". The PSA was produced by Abigail Sheckells and Rissa Dionne from Martin County High School.

 

 

Second place in the Radio category was awarded to "Smoke Face ". The PSA was The PSA was written and recorded my Megan Koenig, Shannon Levy, and Caroline Lohan from the Martin County High School Leadership Class.

 

 

Third place in the Radio category was awarded to "Don't Be Part of The Statistics ". The PSA was written and recorded by Vladimir Villa-Vergara from the Martin County High School Speech Class.

 

 

The Video PSA First Place Winner was produced by South Fork High School Students Working Against Tobacco, in partnership with the school's video class under the direction of Karen Kane. The PSA was produced by Erika Grims and Linda Murray, and directed by Joey Roulette. The cast included Lindon Jacobs, Christian McKnight, Christopher Moutran, Josh Odom, and Geoffrey Yatsko.

 

 

All of the winners were invited to the WSTU-AM studios for the Coaches Corner show, hosted by Mike Thomas, where they were interviewed about their views on youth tobacco use and the process of creating their spots.

All three winning radio spots will air on WSTU-AM and WPSL-AM radio for the next year. The winning video PSA will be used at upcoming St. Lucie Mets baseball games, and will also screen on the scoreboard at the new Miami Marlins stadium.
